A firmware update is apparently now available - however unless you live in Japan you will not be prompted to download it. Why? Well, according to the PlayStation Blog fw 2.43 is specific to the Japan region, and only PS3 users there will be required to install the update. PS3 users in all other regions will not be prompted to download v2.43. However, if you manually initiate a firmware update by clicking on “System Update” under the XMB’s Settings icon, the v2.43 update will be available, regardless of where you are located. Curious.

According to various sources this firmware update adds the video download service functionality for the Japanese region.

C&VG reckon the next firmware update for the PS3 (2.50) will include a feature that enables you to take a screen shot of in game action. While this will be a welcome addition, it`s to be hoped it grabs the screen in full HD. It`s still just a rumour though, so don`t hold your breath

A PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.

EDIT: although it has been reported elsewhere that Trophies have been optimized to load quicker with the new update, if I click on a buddy`s profile to see their trophies my PS3 throws up an error (FFFFFFFF)

EDIT 2: after rebooting the PS3 for the second time Trophies appear to work again, so not quite sure what happened. I`m not entirely convinced the reported speed increase exists. There are rumors that this update has also fixed Bluetooth headset connection problems, such as those reported by Warhawk players since the last firmware update, although this has not been confirmed yet. Whispers also suggest this update is paving the way for the Life With Playstation service expected to arrive very soon, again this is unconfirmed.

After yesterday`s speculation that the 2.41 firmware would be arriving on Wednesday, I`ve just switched my PS3 on to find that 2.41 is online now. Let`s hope it fixes what was broken with 2.40 for some people

UPDATE: this is a press release issued by Sony regarding the new firmware update

The PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software version 2.41 is now available for update from July 8, 2008. With this update, we have fixed the problem that prevented a limited number of PS3s from activating properly after updating to version 2.40, when certain system administrative data were contained on the HDD.

For those users who have updated to version 2.40 and have experienced the problem that XMB™(XrossMediaBar) is not appearing, or no images are displaying on the screen, please contact Customer Service.

We have confirmed that for those users who have successfully updated to the version 2.40 and are able to activate the PS3 system, this problem will not occur on your PS3.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

According to a report on CVG Sony customer support reckon there will be a `fixed` firmware update (2.41?) coming mid-week.
